To Demo or Not to Demo…

In this little.. article.. I will discuss the practice of releasing Demo versions of software (focusing on Games but touching on other items), versus not releasing such versions.

Companies have, in the past and present, used Demo versions of their software to either promote it or to allow consumers a free ’sneak peek’ at the software. The most common demos that a standard consumer will use are Game demos (this is a generality of course).

So, should Game Developers definitely release demo versions of their games? It is a pretty sticky question to be honest; sure you allow people to preview the game before they buy it, but you also have to balance that with development time/budgets and the question of how much to put into the demo, whether to have it be the full release only requiring an unlock or a limited release with only partial functionality (the first is an open invitation to hackers/crackers to get the game out on the P2P market [though I am not against P2P in its entirety, P2P has plenty of legitimate uses ( uses a P2P protocol for their used to update/install the game client)]. Where do you draw the line? Lets take a look at some pros and cons of releasing Demo’s to the masses:

Pro: Demo versions of software allow users to experience the content before committing their money.
Con: Demo versions have a history of getting hacked by those same users and distributed ‘unlocked’ without anyone paying a dime.
Solution? Well, it is hard to come up with a solution short of making a separate build of the software – if the software doesn’t have the full capabilities of the unlocked program, it doesn’t allow for crackers to open it up for free distribution; this, of course, brings to head the cost of extended development time needed to create a separate limited build of the software.

Opinion: I personally think that developers taking the extra time (and extra cost burden) will see those expenditures come back in the form of increased sales. I know that I use Demo’s often to see if my computer can handle the game (even if only on low settings), and if the game play is intriguing enough to keep me interested and be worth my investment. It is hard to judge if a game will run well on your computer just by looking at the Minimum Requirements of a game – sometimes other factors can come into play and prevent the game from running properly at the lowest possible configuration settings. (Case in point: I tried the demo for on my laptop which exceeded minimum requirements (though not quite meeting recommended) – even with all of the settings turned to the lowest values, the game just would not run properly. On the other hand, demoing not only showed me that the game would run on lower settings, but that it was a game I would enjoy [and subsequently ended up purchasing]).

This topic must be a pretty heavily debated one in game companies, but I am sure that enough research would show that demos, in the end, help the bottom line.. which is what matters most of all to most of these huge companies right?

I am probably going to have this topic on my brain for a while, so expect more thinking from me on the subject. Until then, enjoy your gaming!

City of Heroes Issue 13: Architect now named "Power and Responsibility"

According to an announcement on the by Matt “Positron” Miller, the much touted Architect feature (where you could create custom missions for other players to go through that I talked about in my post ) has been pushed back to Issue 14 to add further enhancement (such as adding custom characters).

Instead will be replacing the Architect feature with a few other new goodies; Instead of going piece by piece I will quote the whole text below:

Good morning! When we announced Issue 13: Architect a couple weeks back, we were overwhelmed by the positive response. Much of the feedback was centered around the Mission Architect system which allows players to create their own missions and story arcs. We have been actively following forum threads and private messages about the feature, and have even discussed it with players in person at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle.
It became apparent that you guys really want this feature, but in order to fully realize your dreams of writing your own missions you need creative control in one more key area: The ability to create “customized” characters to fight with or against in your missions. Adding custom characters has always been on our Mission Architect feature list, but we had considered it a “stretch goal.” That is, we could launch the system without this feature because our confidence was high that the rest of the system was incredibly robust.
But after listening to you guys, we realize that this feature simply must be in at launch. You have convinced us that it is an integral part of the Mission Architect, and we have reworked schedules and timelines to accomplish this. Rather than push the launch of Issue 13 out completely for one (albeit really cool and very complex) feature, the Mission Architect is going to see a slight delay. What is not going to be delayed is the rest of Issue 13. To that end, the previously announced feature set for Issue 13, together with new features that we are announcing today, will become Issue 13 and Issue 14.
Issue 14 will take on the name “Architect” and contain the Mission Architect feature along with other features we’ll announce at a later date. We are planning Issue 14: Architect to be released in the first Quarter of 2009. Issue 13 is now called “Issue 13: Power and Responsibility” and be launched in the Fall of 2008.
Issue 13: Power and Responsibility
Issue 13: Power and Responsibility will contain the bulk of features we’ve announced previously, including:
• Shield and Pain Domination powersets
• Merit Reward system
• Day Jobs (that include a suite of new costume pieces)
• Additional Cimerora and Midnight Squad mission arcs
In addition, we have some other new exciting features to reveal that will be included in Issue 13: Power and Responsibility. These include:
• Leveling Pact
• Multi-Builds
• PvE & PvP Powers rebalancing
• Villain Patron Power Respec
• Supergroup Base Repricing
Over the coming weeks we’ll be providing more details about the above points, but let me give you an overview of some of them now.
The Leveling Pact: A new innovation to MMOs, this groundbreaking system allows you and a buddy to create new characters and have your XP be permanently in sync, whether both characters are online or not. You will always be the same level, even if your buddy plays ten times more often than you do! It’s sort of like “Extreme Sidekicking.”
Multi-Builds: Another innovation to City of Heroes, we are delivering the ability to have two different build-outs of each character, including which powers are selected and which Enhancements are slotted. This will now be possible for characters who want to take advantage of it. By visiting any Trainer you can switch the entire build of your character to an alternate one. You can use this separate build for whatever you like. If you wish to use different power selections for soloing and groups, you can do that. This even makes it possible to have different IO sets slotted for PVP and PVE. It’s up to you.
PvE and PvP Powers Rebalancing: Floyd “Castle” Grubb and the powers designers have been hard at work in finding ways to strike a better balance between the many powers in the game. The scope of what they are doing is too broad to go into details here, but we’re very excited and we’ll share more information soon. Suffice it to say that we know that you don’t want your PvE powers adjusted because of how they play in PvP, so we’re taking a new tact in power balancing with Issue 13.
Summary
Issue 13 was so big we had to turn it into two releases, Issue 13: Power and Responsibility and Issue 14: Architect. Issue 13 will be going into beta soon and launching this Fall. It will include most of the previously announced features of Issue 13, and then some. Issue 14: Architect will include the full-featured Mission Architect and is scheduled to launch to the live servers in Q1, 2009. I am really looking forward to getting Issue 13 into your hands as soon as possible, and starting off a kick-[censored] 2009 with the release of Mission Architect.

While I am disappointed that Architect is to be delayed, the new ideas that will be popping forth look promising. I like the idea for Dual builds (PVP players have been asking for that forever, but it will help PVE players who need to have different power layouts for different enemies), and the whole Linked XP system has promise.

That said, we will have to wait until a bit more information is put out by about the whole thing.

Stay tuned as teases us a bit more.

Lest We Forget – 9/11/2008

Today is the anniversary of a day that no american in the near future will forget – the day when terrorists from the Al Quaeda network rammed 2 planes into the World Trade Center, 1 in the Pentagon, and 1 short of its target thanks to its heroic passengers.

No words I can say can really express what today is to me and to many Americans – all I can say is: I remember – and I Cannot Forgive.

Almost time to Create…

…and Destroy Life in Well, as soon as the bloody download finishes on this laptop. Got a finicky connection here in the Barracks that goes from ok strength (still not that good, 300kb or so DL) to jack for strength (200b [yes, bytes]) in see saw motions. Thats what ya get for not only being in a barracks with a bunch of other people, but being on a base who has a contract with Comcast.

As soon as I can get in the game and get some impressions I will update and let y’all see what I am up to. I hope that some of you out there fell for the temptation too!

Are you ready for SPORE?

Yeah thats right, I am asking if you are ready for What is SPORE? Well, its an innovative (I use that term to the full meaning) new game by that allows you to create.. well.. life from cells on up. You have full control over your creatures appearance and (eventually) civilization type.

SPORE is set to go ‘Live’ tomorrow, , meaning you really really need to get on the ball folks!. From the previews already out there, the game is going to do some very interesting things for the Sim game category – that has to be expected as it is a creation of … the creators of the acclaimed (and addictive) series.

I have to admit, with a slight bit of guilt, that I am already on the pre-order bandwagon. has a bundle deal going on right now where you (well.. $5.00 less than buying them separately, which basically reduces the price of the Creature Creator to 4.99).. if you don’t want to jump on the bandwagon right away, you can from EA’s website.

Count down the hours folks.. in just a little bit you will be able to conquer the galaxy with a race that comes directly from the dark recesses of your mind… However weird or ghastly that may be :) .

Want to see some SPORE creations? Head over to the .

Here are 2 of my crazy creations in the Creature Creator:

Lord of the Rings Online: Mines of Moria.. it is nearing

Yep, hold on to your britches folks – according to , the testing phase of MoM (short for Mines of Moria) is nearing its conclusion (this could, of course, still mean a month or more of testing) – I am guessing an Open Beta period will come around soonish, but that aside we can look forward to delving the Deeps of Moria within the next few months.

So, what shall I do in the meantime? Well, I think what my next few posts will be about is the 2 new classes (Runekeeper and Warden) as well as some speculation on enhancements & the new Legendary Weapon system.

I am excited for the update, as can be observed from my posts – I love the LotRO Universe and will faithfully stick with it until either I pass or the game does :) .

So stay tuned, when I have some more sleep in me I will start off by writing about the Runekeeper (which, by the way, is a hotly debated topic on the ).
